Rakim

Rakim is an Urdu Word Processor, whose editing powers may be limited, but it's great if you are into Urdu WP. This is the shareware version, which was released decades ago. I haven't found any other version of this software.

With the help of Rakim, you don't need a special keyboard or anything. The keyboard follows simple phonic typing, i.e., A is "alif", B is "bay". Others are produced be depressing the Shift key. You can even incorporate English into your work. Numbers are all Roman. Printers are limited, but who can beat HP Laser Jet's output? Here is an example.

You can download Rakim if you want to.

Here are some important tips:

  1. Its a DOS program, not Windows.
  2. You can't use the mouse: it don't work there.
  3. You have to use the (ALT + ) combos to access file menus, like ALT + F for File, etc.
  4. It only has three printers. Try all three to get the best results from your printout. I recommend a laser printer.
  5. The keys are phonic, i.e., A is Alif, B is Bay, etc. Some of them work with a SHIFT + combo. So if you can't get a 'sheen', its SHIFT + I (I think).
  6. If you wanna do what I did and make GIFs out of your work, you'll have to type it up and use Win95's Print Screen key to capture an image. Then paste the image into a photo editor and clear it up.
  7. Its not a What You See Is What You Get (WYSIWYG) thingee. So, when you increase the font size, underline, or center it, it APPEARS the same but in the printout, IT DOES what you asked it to do.

There are other softwares, such as Kaatib , which is just an advanced version of Rakim. Technically, it is better than Rakim as it has more functions, but what I like is the simplicity of Rakim.
